This well-run Big Five reserve is affiliated to a unique Endangered Species Centre
Overall rating
4/5

One of many private reserves set close to the Kruger National Park, Kapama differs from the likes of Sabi Sands, Timbavati and Klaserie in that it is a fenced ecosystem separated from other reserves in the region by farmland. On the one hand, this inevitably makes it feel a little tame and contrived by comparison to its near neighbours, but it also means that wildlife is resident all year through and seasonality is less of a factor in your game viewing. All the Big Five are present and likely to be seen, as is a pack of the endangered African wild dog. Kapama also offers optional visits to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, a bordering educational set up best known for its success with breeding cheetah in captivity for rehabilitation into the wild. Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre is the only place where you can see the so-called king cheetah, a rare variant – once thought to be a distinct species – whose striking semi-striped coat is associated with an unusual recessive gene.
